This collaborative production of “Romeo and Juliet” brought together actors and theatre makers from Serbia and Kosovo in an ambitious dual-language staging performed simultaneously in Serbian and Albanian, with an English version included. Using Shakespeare’s tragedy as a platform for dialogue, the play explored hate, love, and language—both as a barrier and as a means of connection—reflecting the region’s history of division and its ongoing search for reconciliation. Moving beyond sporadic past collaborations, the production presented Shakespeare as a negotiator for change, emphasizing shared human needs, mutual understanding, and the power of storytelling to bridge cultural and political divides.
“Once you mention Romeo and Juliet, I think it becomes clear what we are trying to do,” the Kosovo playwright Jeton Neziraj told The Times.
“The production is seen as a chance to push forward dialogue and reconciliation in the region”~ The Guardian.
