“The Handke Project” will be presented on February 21, 2026 to the Hungarian audience at METTRIN – Center for Events and Art in Bánk, Hungary, starting at 18:00.
Produced by Qendra Multimedia, The Handke Project brings together an international cast including Arben Bajraktaraj (France), Ejla Bavčić (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Adrian Morina (Kosovo), Klaus Martini (Italy), Verona Koxha (Kosovo), and Anja Drljević (Montenegro). The play is written by Jeton Neziraj and directed by Blerta Neziraj.
“The Handke Project – Or Justice for Peter’s Madness” attempts, through the lens of the controversial Nobel Prize-winning writer Peter Handke, to explore the delicate balance between freedom of expression and social responsibility in theater.
Since its premiere in 2022, the play has been staged more than 40 times across most Balkan countries, including Serbia, as well as in several European countries such as Italy, Germany, France, and Norway.
Described as one of the most powerful artistic creations to emerge from Kosovo, the production has sparked significant discussion among audiences and international theatre critics, who have responded as follows:
“‘The Handke Project’ is performed in English by an outstanding pan-European ensemble of six actors. […] Here we enter the territory of Peter Handke, the subject ‘like Peter Pan’ in the biting satire of Kosovar playwright Jeton Neziraj… Neziraj is widely regarded as Kosovo’s national playwright, similar to Václav Havel’s role for Czechoslovakia.
Neziraj shares with Havel a natural sense of play and an awareness of the brutal absurdities of bureaucracy – all serving as a subtle mask for the author’s anger. These qualities appear in eruptions and clashes, like a fireworks display, through Blerta Neziraj’s direction. Together, the author and director transform anger into an artistic bullet.”
