Open Call for Theater Professionals and Researchers/Experts in Environmental Issues, Climate Emergency, and Eco-Urban Degradation

As part of a joint effort with partners from across Europe for the 2026-2027 theater season, Qendra Multimedia from Pristina is planning to produce a theater project aimed at addressing and problematizing issues related to urban degradation and, consequently, the climate emergency. The project seeks to explore our intellectual and artistic position in a society entrenched in cycles of destructive environmental behaviors and articulate this position performatively.

The foundation of the project is the play “The Five Seasons of the Enemy of the People,” based on the tragic story of architect and urban planner Rexhep Luci. In post-war Pristina, Luci was striving to implement urban planning controls. From construction companies, manufacturers, corrupt political elites, opportunistic media, war commanders, UN officials, and others, he was considered an “enemy.” Rexhep Luci received numerous death threats and was ultimately murdered at the entrance to his apartment in Pristina.

For 25 years, unregulated construction in Pristina and Kosovo has reached catastrophic levels. Beyond the narrow interests at play, what has happened to our cities in these post-war years reflects our relationship with public space and public health. Building without plans or oversight has turned our cities into suffocating spaces; unsafe, unfriendly public spaces have become continuous sources of anxiety, while the reduction of green areas guarantees an even darker and more uncertain future.

For this collaborative endeavor, we are seeking a team of professionals from various fields to join the creative team for the production:

  • Researchers and scholars with expertise and focus on environmental issues, sustainability, and public spaces
  • Playwrights
  • Actors
  • Choreographers with experience in theater choreography
  • Videographers with experience in creating video effects for theater
  • Set designers

This production will be produced as part of the project “Future Narratives…” funded by the European Union under the Creative Europe program, implemented by UniT Graz (Austria); Het Nieuëstedelijk (Belgium); Theatre Bellevue (Netherlands); Qendra Multimedia (Kosovo); Cesie ETS (Italy); The Hessisches Landestheater Marburg GmbH (Germany); and Mhtconsult (Denmark).

Production period: March–June 2025
